About Great Bend

Great Bend was laid out in 1871 on the Santa Fe Trail, just north of the point where the Arkansas River begins its great bend to the east, and the railroad arrived the next year. It is the seat of Barton County, near the geographic center of Kansas, and about 14,700 people live here today.
