Garden City was founded in 1878 by the Fulton brothers on the plains of southwest Kansas, and the story goes that it was named for the Fultons' garden, watered from a well. C. J. "Buffalo" Jones joined them the next year and promoted the young town. It became a city in 1883 and is the seat of Finney County, home to about 28,200 people.
